Room Remix
WRITTEN BY: Diaz Allen
Since some of us are spending more time at home these days, we should make the best of our surroundings. I am not talking about putting lipstick on a pig. I am talking about giving your home a much needed facelift. Remix it! During the process we have to keep in mind that we need to do this economically and classically. If you need a total makeover or just a spruce up, I have the perfect plan for you.
Decide on a budget and color scheme and stick to it. List what your needs are and buy those first. Hunt around the house to see if there are items that can be repurposed. When furniture shopping, look for pieces that may be considered transitional. Transitional is a look that could fit into any style category based on its surroundings. These items tend not to be too curved or straight. Try to keep the fabrics neutral. Colors like black, brown, cream, and gray may be ideal.
Now after we decide on our furniture pieces we can move on to putting color in the room. From the color scheme you chose, you need to select a wall color. For those of you that are bold like me, pick a wall to be the accent wall and paint it another color from your color scheme. Be careful. Make sure it works together.
As you choose accessories, have fun, but also be thrifty. Shop at discount stores and stores with sale or clearance item shelves. Never pay full price for something that you will not promise to look at every day for the next five years. Look for window panels, picture frames, art, throw pillows, rugs, and lighting. Colors do not have to be an exact match but should be in the same family of hues and tints to work together. Make sure you purchase items that will work with your lifestyle. (For example: No glass tables or rough woven rugs if you have small children.) If you do not like prints or patterns, try solid fabrics in various materials such as silk, velvet, cotton, tweed, and fur.
After you have put your room together, stand back and look at it. Explore options by moving art and accessories around. I suggest leaving the price tags on until you are committed to the items you purchased. When the room is done, get a second opinion. You can even email me to get some professional advice.
