MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE?

WRITTEN BY: Diaz Allen
Many people frown upon self-proclaimed "socialites". They are, in fact, not usually celebrities or people that even have some type of noted accomplishments. A socialite is a person who is part of high-society because of their participation in social activities, whether she is entertaining or being entertained.
I coined the term "localite" to describe a person that heavily networks in their geographical area for self-benefit and is highly recognized. Many socialites are wealthy and have some type of charitable or philanthropic link. A localite does not have to be wealthy, but his drive and ambition will reward him tremendously. A localite will find that he is never without anything and is always busy. Being out and about can definitely being major benefits. There are a number of ways to become a localite.
One easy way to get recognized is to join online social groups. Sites like MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn are quick and free tools to use to make yourself known. Another step to become a localite is to join a local church. It does not have to be a mega church, but the more members the better. Do more than just warm the seat on Sundays. After deciding which church to call home, join ministries within the church. This will also link you to the community and other events that may open doors. A third way to become a localite is to join a professional organization. If you have a specific skill or degree, there are professional groups that meet online or in person that will allow you to meet other people of interest. This will be a great addition to the sorority or fraternity you may have joined in college.
Take pride in who you are and what you do. Spread the word and take advantage of these strategies. Whether you network online or in person, you will definitely earn great exposure. Get up, get out, and become a localite.
